[Paris]: Aubier, 2005. 380, [3] p. ISBN 2-70-072345-7.

This collective work reflects on the historical background of the concept of the individual as an autonomous subject. The analysis focuses on the development of signs of personal identity during the Middle Ages, especially name, signature and portraits. The authors argue that the genesis of the modern individual is characterised by a collection of steps undertaken during the medieval period, and the different facets of the individual (autonomous social and moral actor) are expressed in the first person without it being singled out or excluded from the group that defines them (family, lineage, parish or feud).

SILVÉRIO, Carla Alexandra Serapicos de Brito - Representações da realeza na cronística medieval portuguesa : a dinastia de Borgonha. Lisboa : Colibri, 2004. 178, [1] p.

"Considering the images produced on the Burgundian dynasty in the Portuguese chronicles from the forties of the 13th century until early 16th century by educated laymen, mostly related to the court administrative services, mainly after the creation of the office of chief chronicler of the Kingdom, we seek to analyse them as representative of a political and ideological discourse in which the regal memory of the Kingdom serves as an essential device in the legitimisation of the institution of monarchy itself."

A formação da Europa.

Ex libris, May 2012

DAWSON, Christopher, 1889-1970 - A formação da Europa. Trad. de João Dias Pereira. Braga: Livraria Cruz, 1956. 348, [2] p.: il.; 19 cm. (Critério. Série de História; 31)

In this work the author argues that the birth of Europe took place in the Middle Ages, considering that the 11th century marks the end of the Dark Ages and the emergence of Western culture. For Dawson, four elements constitute European civilisation: the political tradition of the Roman Empire, the religious tradition of the Catholic Church, the intellectual tradition of classical literature and the national traditions of the barbarian people. Dawson concludes that the unity of European civilisation is not based on the secular culture and material progress of recent centuries, but in traditions that evolved before humanism and the achievements of modern civilisation.

Tensões sociais em Portugal na Idade Média.

Ex libris, April 2012

MORENO, Humberto Baquero - Tensões sociais em Portugal na Idade Média. [S.l.] : Athena, [1975?]. 193, [6] p.

“In this collection we have assembled a number of historical research studies relating to a particular social theme. Our purpose was to analyse medieval society through the various tensions that characterised its evolutionary process. Setting aside the concept of a social organisation in strata, under a pre-established and apparently static ‘order’, we mostly sought to determine the modes of reaction or unrest that affected society. Each study essentially followed the purpose of isolating the factors responsible for triggering social tensions (...) We emphasize, however, the strong antagonism that existed between classes and groups within the social context”. (Taken from the introduction)

O tempo das catedrais: a arte e a sociedade, 980-1420.

Ex libris, February 2012

DUBY, Georges - O tempo das catedrais: a arte e a sociedade, 980-1420. - Lisboa: Estampa, 1979. - 314, [3] p.: il.; 21 cm. - (Imprensa universitária; 8)

Throughout the three parts of this book – the Monastery 980-1130, the Cathedral 1130-1280 and the Palace 1280-1420 – the author examines the social and cultural contexts that guided artistic creation in the West between the 10th and 15th centuries. The evolution of art and architecture is thus seen through the evolution of mentalities, of society, and of political and religious power during three periods: the first one marked by monastic culture and the weakening of royal power, the second by the development of cities and of large Gothic cathedrals, and finally, the period marked by the Renaissance and the assertion of secular culture.

In this catalogue, a “collection” is defined as a set of texts with 20 or more documental units published independently, whose diplomatic category is generally that of a “letter”. Chronologically, the diplomatic collections presented in this catalogue refer to the Middle Ages, from the 8th to the 16th centuries. The catalogue is preceded by a study of the publishing of documental sources in both countries during the 19th century. According to its preface, signed by the Fundación Marcelino Botín, this book has no precedent in world historiography and is regarded as an instrument of fundamental importance in the study of Spanish and Portuguese medieval history.
