The second volume of “History of Portugal” covers the period of formation and re-foundation of the Portuguese state. The territory where a small centre of power was formed, in the midst of several lordships, spanned from the Entre-Douro-e-Minho province, in the coast, to the mouth of the Mondego River. To the South and the East, the inhabitants, dwelling in small fortified boroughs or scattered through the wilderness with their cattle, and backed by Badajoz and Seville, resisted or defied with arms in hand the knights and infantrymen from the North. So began an adventure that has lasted over nine centuries.
