Book of the month, September 2008

DANTAS, Marcello (org.) - LUSA, a matriz portuguesa. São Paulo: Mag Mais Rede Cultural, 2007. ISBN 978-85-60169-03-0

A catalogue of the exhibition held in Brazil from October 2007 to September 2008, this book celebrates the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Bank of Brazil, created by King John VI of Portugal in 1808, year of the arrival of the Portuguese royal family at Brazil. This catalogue reflects the path of the Portuguese from Pre-history to the Discoveries, bringing for the first time to Brazil the remote past of Portugal and the formation of the Portuguese language.

We highlight the chapter entitled "The Mediterranean on the eves of Islamisation”, with text by Cláudio Torres, accompanied by photographs of archaeological findings from the Museum of Mértola.

Bringing together a vast and rich historical-cultural collection, “Lusa, the Portuguese matrix” shows the essence of an ancestral and mixed-race Portugal that has contributed to the formation and identity of Brazilian culture.
