As part of the project "Mercator: Merchants' Routes and Trade Cities in the Mediterranean", this itinerary aims to promote the historical and archaeological heritage of the Municipality of Mértola, especially the circuit of Mediterranean trade routes, of which this town is a part of from the earliest times. The river route of the Guadiana is also highlighted as an important trading post of the Roman and Islamic city of Mértola, as well as the land routes that lead to the surrounding mountains, rich in mineral ore, and to the plains with plentiful grain crops. A suggested reading for those wishing to learn on the cultural heritage of the town of Mértola.
