The book now being published brings together the papers presented at the scientific meeting under the theme “Heritage library collections: new perspectives and approaches”, held in Mértola at the Marques Duque Theatre, on 16th March 2012. This publication is accompanied by a DVD that records the key moments of this meeting. This event was organised by the Library of Mértola’s Archaeological Field, under the project “Organisation, development and dissemination of the José Mattoso Library”, started in October 2010, and financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Inalentejo Programme (2007-2013) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The initiative benefited from the contribution of Portuguese experts from key information and documentation services in the field of bibliographic treatment and promotion of heritage library collections. This publication thus reflects the main issues surrounding heritage collections, hopes to promote contact between institutions with heritage collections, and aims to encourage research in the field of Information and Documentation Sciences (IDS) in Portugal, in general, and of heritage collections, in particular.
