Glass unguentarium

Name: Glass unguentarium

Description: Clear glass unguentarium, very iridescent and with many air bubbles. It has a low circular body and a tall cylindrical neck. This piece originates from the spoils of an incineration grave, which identifies it as a funeral offering. The unguentaria served as containers for perfumes, essential oils or ointments.

Name: Decorated bowl

Description: Bowl with interior decoration of a bird surrounded by unidentifiable phytomorphic motifs. The colours used in the decoration are white, green and amber.

Chronology: 12th century

José Mattoso Library celebrates second anniversary

On the coming 6 October the José Mattoso Library will celebrate two years of existence. The team involved in the project continues to develop earnestly the tasks of bibliographic treatment and dissemination of the special collection on medieval history. The collection is waiting to be incorporated with the Library of Mértola’s Archaeological Site (BCAM), although the respective bibliographic catalogue is already available online since March 2012.



BCAM team participates in the 3rd Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Access

The Library of Mértola’s Archaeological Site (BCAM) team will take part in the 3rd Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Access, with the presentation of a poster entitled “Scientific Repository of Mértola’s Archaeological Field: access, locate and sh@re”.

The conference will take place at the Rectory, New University of Lisbon, on 1 and 2 October 2012.

Meeting on “Castles of the Military Orders” - Tomar

International Meeting on "Castles of the Military Orders', jointly organised by the Municipality of Palmela /GESOS and the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage, will be held at the Convent of Christ in Tomar, 10-13 October 2012.



The CAM will present a communication on 11 October, entitled "The Castle of Mértola. The transformations of the Order of Santiago (14-15th centuries) "- Susana Gómez and Maria de Fátima Palma.

 

Exhibition: "Variations on a theme - the Vascão brook", by Orlando José

From 15 to 23 September the exhibition "Variations on a theme - the Vascão brook", by Orlando José, will be held in the exhibition room of the headquarters of Mértola’s Archaeological Site / Centre for Islamic Studies and the Mediterranean. This exhibition is part of the programme of "The Meeting of the Great River of the South," sponsored by the Association for Heritage Protection of Mértola (ADPM).

BCAM at the 11th National Congress of Librarians, Archivists and Documentalists

 

The BCAM team will present a communication entitled “Libraries, social responsibility and active citizenship: the experience of the Library of Mértola’s Archaeological Field“vb at the 11th National Congress of Librarians, Archivists and Documentalists, to be held in Lisbon on the 18th, 19th and 20th October 2012, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

The congress will focus on integration, access and the social value of libraries and archives. Yet another opportunity for BCAM to disclose its collection, services and resources!
